Balance

Balance is this week’s words of the week.  It is a very interesting word, if you’ve ever given it much thought.  Here is what Dictionary.com defines the word balance as:

Noun:

  1. A state of equilibrium or equipoise; equal distribution of weight, amount, etc.
  2. Something used to produce equilibrium; counterpoise
  3. Mental steadiness or emotional stability; habit of calm behavior, judgment, etc
  4. a state of bodily equilibrium
  5. an instrument for determining weight
  6. the remainder or rest of
  7. the power or ability to decide an outcome by throwing one’s strength, influence, support or the like, to one side or the other

There are a bunch more definitions (31 in total to be exact) but you get the idea.  Some of the definitions still don’t make total sense to me, but I look at it as this…balance is what you get when all parts of you are even.  That can mean physical, emotional or anything else.  If all parts are equal and feeling good then you are balanced.

Isn’t balance something we all want?  That means, for us kids, at the end of the day when we go to bed we will feel like we got a lot done at and for school, our families and even had some fun.  If we work then we will want to have gotten some of that done too.

It’s really about paying attention to all parts.  It’s super easy to get so busy trying to do well in school, get all our homework done, eat and get ready for bed that we forget to have some fun every day. Or to spend time with our family every day.  And those are the things that we are going to school for!

We are going to school, if you really think about it, so we can learn.  We learn so we can get a good job and make a living. We want a good job and to make a living so we can have a family and enjoy them.  So it all comes back to enjoying free time and family. Those are really good habits to get into early on, and now is as good a time as any.

It’s also important to balance life the other way, to balance fun with work.  So it’s not just about making sure kids are remembering to have fun.  It’s about making sure they are remembering to do their work. To do well in school and complete all their homework every day.  Balance.

This week, while practicing yoga with your kids, talk to them about balance.  I will be posting some poses that are great to do to improve your physical balance throughout the week.  I’ll also be sharing some other activities to help you teach your kids about living a balanced life.

Here’s a poem about balance that I really, really like, and I thought I would share it with you.
