Yoga classes are different everywhere you go. Some are more active, some have more meditation, some are full of games…they’re just all really different.
There are some basic things you can expect when you take your child to a yoga class. Classes should start with a warm up of breathing and exercises. Most classes will go to standing poses next. They are more active than the sitting and laying down poses and are better done at the beginning of a class when the kids have more energy to expend. A lot of classes will do some games or partner activities at this point, letting the kids work with each other and get to know each other. After that will be sitting and floor poses, and the class will likely end with relaxation and meditations.
All of these sections should be age appropriate in both amount of time and difficulty of exercises. Some may be high energy, some might be low energy, but the best will have a good mix. I always mix the energy levels in my classes. When working with kids it’s important to pay attention to the kids’ energy, and be able to kind of know what they need and what will help them have fun and get some exercise in.
By starting out with the higher energy activities they are able to use their energy up early, which will make it easier for then to settle down for the relaxation and meditation section of the classes.
It’s really important that you find a class that has good energy for your child. Everyone is different, and if your child has any particular special needs then you will want to consider those as well when looking at the energy level of different classes. There are many to choose from, both online and off, and finding the right one can mean the difference between your child loving yoga and health, and not.
