What kind of Yoga should I do?


If you’ve talked to very many people about yoga you have probably heard lots of terms.  Ashtanga, Hatha, Bikram…there are so many different kinds of yoga it can be totally confusing!  I almost gave up because it all seemed so confusing to me.  But boy am I glad I didn’t!  It turns out it’s not so tough to figure it out, if you can just find a nice, easy explanation of it all.

Bikram – This kind of yoga shouldn’t be done with kids.  It is where people get in a room that’s like 95-105 degrees and do yoga in there.  I hear it is very good, and an awesome work out, but it seems a little crazy to me!

Hatha – This is my favorite kind of yoga.  It’s slow and mellow, and doesn’t try to kill you when you do it.  It takes a lot of precision, and builds your muscles and flexibility…it is a very cool kind of yoga!

Vinyasa – This yoga focuses a lot on doing yoga with specific breaths.  This is the kind of yoga where they do sun salutations.  It’s a little tougher than Hatha yoga, but still a very good kind to try.

Ashtanga – Ashtanga yoga is a kind of yoga that has people going from one pose to the next in a kind of smooth flow.  There’s not a lot of stopping between the poses, so it can be really tough…but a great workout!

These are some of the more popular types of yoga you might hear about.  It’s not as hard to understand as it seems, but it does take a little time.  If you find a place that teaches one particular kind of yoga call them and ask what it is.  Don’t feel like you have to do it if it’s something you didn’t think it was.  And if you’re looking at it for your kids, make sure you talk to the teacher and find out exactly what they expect.
